From Sleeve to Slab: 5 Tips for First-Time Graders

This article is written for first-time graders who may be new to the hobby or simply new to grading itself.
Starting Your Card Grading Journey
Submitting your first cards for grading can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming. Whether you collect Pokémon, sports cards, or other trading card games, grading is the step that protects your collection and gives it real credibility. Majesty Grading Company (MGC) is here to guide you through every stage of the process. Below, we share five essential tips to help you get started with confidence.
1. Choose the Right Cards to Grade
Not every card needs grading. First-time collectors often ask which cards are worth sending in. As a rule of thumb, look at three factors:
- Condition – Cards in excellent condition are more likely to achieve a higher grade.
- Value – Consider both sentimental and potential market value.
- Rarity – Limited edition releases, rookie cards, or special promos often benefit most from grading.
If you are unsure, take advantage of our Premium Collector Consultation service, where an MGC expert can guide you on what to send.
2. Understand the Grading Scale
Our grading scale runs from 1 to 10, with 10 representing a card in flawless condition. Knowing what each grade means can help you set realistic expectations. A Grade 10 will maximise value and prestige, but even mid-level grades provide protection and authentication for your collection.

3. Safely Package Your Cards
One of the most common questions we receive is how to package cards safely for grading. The goal is to protect your card from bending or scratches during transit. Here’s a simple step-by-step method:
- Place the card in a clean penny sleeve.
- Insert the sleeved card into a semi-rigid card holder (not a top loader, as they are harder to remove safely).
- Use painter’s tape or a pull tab to make it easy to take the card out without damage.
- Stack multiple cards together with cardboard protection on either side, then secure with an elastic band or tape (but never tape directly on the holder).
- Wrap securely in bubble wrap and place inside a sturdy box or padded envelope.
If packaging feels daunting, remember you can also submit in person via one of our Local Submission Hubs.
4. Track Your Submission
Once your cards are on their way, you’ll want peace of mind that they are safe. Always use tracked and insured postage for mailing, or rely on our trusted hubs for direct submission. After your cards reach us, you can monitor progress online through our Customer Portal.
5. Enjoy the Reveal
The excitement of receiving your graded cards is one of the best parts of the hobby. Whether your card comes back a Grade 10 or lower, encapsulation secures its condition, adds long-term protection, and gives your collection a professional finish. Remember, even cards that do not score perfectly still hold both sentimental and potential resale value when authenticated by MGC.
Final Thoughts
Starting your card grading journey is simple when you know the basics. By choosing the right cards, understanding the grading scale, packaging safely, and tracking your submission, you can enjoy the process with confidence. MGC is proud to be the UK’s leading choice for card grading, trusted by collectors nationwide.
