How to Prepare Your Cards for Grading – Step-by-Step

This article is written for beginners who are preparing to submit their first cards for grading.

Why preparation matters

If you’ve decided to send your cards to Majesty Grading Company (MGC), great choice. But before you seal that envelope, it’s important to know how to pack your cards properly. Damaged cards or poor packaging can lead to disappointing grades or, worse, cards getting lost or bent in transit. This guide will help you prepare your cards confidently, even if it’s your very first time.

Step 1 – Choose which cards to send

You don’t have to grade everything in your collection. Start with the cards that matter most to you – whether that’s a high-value Pokémon card, a sports rookie, or something with sentimental value. If you’re unsure whether a card is worth grading, check our Knowledge Centre or speak to a local card shop for advice.

Step 2 – Place each card in a penny sleeve

A penny sleeve is a soft, protective plastic sleeve that helps prevent surface scratches. Always insert the card gently, making sure not to catch the corners. Avoid using rigid sleeves or top-loaders without a soft sleeve first, as these can cause friction and damage the card edges.

Step 3 – Put the sleeved card into a semi-rigid holder

Once sleeved, each card should go into a semi-rigid card holder. This gives the right level of protection without being too bulky. Semi-rigids are the industry standard for grading submissions – they hold the card securely but allow it to be removed easily by our team without risk of damage.

Step 4 – Stack and secure your cards

If you’re submitting more than one card, stack them neatly in the order you’ve listed on your submission form. You could use an elastic band or paper band to hold them together gently – not too tight! Wrap them in a layer of bubble wrap or soft tissue to keep them from moving around in the parcel.

Step 5 – Add your completed submission form

Print and include your completed submission form. If you’re an MGC Member, make sure to log in and use the member submission option for your discount and priority service. Some people like to keep a photo or copy of their form for reference (but we’ll keep you posted anyway).

Step 6 – Package securely in a cardboard box

Ideally you should use a sturdy cardboard box – not a padded envelope – to send your cards. Envelopes can be bent or crushed during delivery. Fill any empty space in the box with packing material (bubble wrap, scrunched paper, etc.) so the cards don’t move around. Tape the box securely, and don’t forget to write your return address on the outside.

Step 7 – Use tracked and insured delivery

We strongly recommend using a tracked and insured service, such as Royal Mail Special Delivery. This protects your cards in case of loss or damage during transit. Once posted, keep your receipt and tracking number safe until you’ve received confirmation from MGC that your cards have arrived.

Alternative: Drop off at a Local Submission Hub

If you’re nervous about posting your cards, you can visit one of our Local Submission Hubs to hand over your cards in person. It’s a great way to get started if you want advice from a trusted local store or just prefer that extra peace of mind.

Tips to avoid common mistakes

  • Don’t tape the card holders shut – This makes them harder to open and could damage your card.
  • Don’t use toploaders without sleeves – These can damage card corners during removal.
  • Always check the address – Use the most up-to-date postal address listed in your confirmation email.
  • Label clearly – If your name is different from the name on the payment, include a note so we can match it easily.
