The Difference Between Raw and Graded Cards – And Why It Matters

This article is written for beginners, casual fans, and TCG parents who want to understand what makes a graded card different from a raw one.
What is a raw card?
In the world of trading cards, a raw card simply means one that hasn’t been professionally graded. It’s the version that comes straight out of a booster pack, a tin, or a binder – untouched, unverified, and usually stored in a penny sleeve or toploader.
Raw cards are how most collectors start. They’re easier to trade casually, and you can often pick them up cheaply at shops, events, or online. But they come with one big question mark: what condition are they really in?
What is a graded card?
A graded card is one that’s been assessed by a professional grading company – like Majesty Grading Company (MGC). Grading involves carefully checking the card for flaws and assigning a score, usually out of 10, based on its condition.
Once graded, the card is sealed in a secure slab with a label showing its grade and key details. The slab protects the card from further damage and creates a permanent, verified record of its condition.
Raw vs graded: Why it matters
The difference might sound small, but it has a big impact. Here’s why:
1. Graded cards are easier to trust
When buying or selling, a graded card is like buying a car with an MOT. You know it’s been checked over by a professional. With raw cards, there’s always a risk – sellers might overestimate the condition, or photos might not show small defects. Grading removes that doubt.
2. Graded cards are better protected
Cards in a slab don’t get bent, scratched, or scuffed. If your child accidentally drops it, it’s safe. If you want to store it long-term, you don’t have to worry about humidity or handling damage. It’s peace of mind in plastic.
3. Graded cards tend to sell for more
Because the condition is confirmed, graded cards often sell faster and for higher prices. Even two identical cards – one raw, one graded – will usually fetch different amounts. Don’t take our word for it: check eBay’s sold listings or follow @mgc_uk on Instagram to see real-life examples.
4. Raw cards have more risk – and more guesswork
If you’re buying raw, it takes a trained eye to spot tiny flaws that could affect the value. A surface dent, a slightly off-centre print, or a corner nick might not be visible in photos but could drop a card from a 9 to a 7. Grading removes that uncertainty.
Do I need to grade everything?
Definitely not. Some cards are best left raw – like low-value duplicates or cards you’re not planning to keep long-term. But if a card has sentimental value, looks mint, or is a key piece in your collection, grading is certainly worth considering.
Why grading matters for UK collectors

Your cards stay safe, get graded quickly, and you can trust the results – whether you’re into Pokémon, sports, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or something more niche.
