Black Lotus Gets Graded by MGC and Sells for £20,000
This article is written for High End Collectors and Flippers who want proof that grading and selling with MGC can uncover hidden value.
When a £2,500 Card Becomes a £20,000 Sale
Sometimes in the world of trading cards, a second opinion can change everything. That’s exactly what happened when Mr and Mrs Chambers submitted their Black Lotus card to MGC, expecting it to be worth around £2,500. They left with £20,000 – and one of the most iconic stories in Magic: The Gathering history.
How It Started: A Forgotten Gem
Mr Chambers, a former employee at a trading card wholesale distributor, had owned the card for decades. When he appeared on the MGC Podcast, he shared how the card had been sitting in storage since the early 90s. Believing it to be a standard Black Lotus, they were offered £2,500 for it.
But during MGC’s expert evaluation, we spotted something different – the card wasn’t just a Black Lotus. It was an Alpha Edition Black Lotus – one of the rarest and most sought-after printings in MTG history.
Alpha vs Beta – What’s the Difference?
The Alpha Edition was Magic’s original print run, released in 1993. Only 1,100 of each rare were ever printed. These cards are easily identified by their slightly more rounded corners and a black border that looks subtly different from the Beta set. Beta cards came next, with around 3,200 copies of each rare, making Alpha editions more than three times rarer.
Collectors know: Alpha is the holy grail.
From Discovery to Mission
Once the card was graded as an MGC 4 and confirmed as an Alpha, MGC’s founder Jake Kirkham took the card on a mission. Working in partnership with eBay, the card was featured in targeted promotional campaigns, hobby news stories, and shown to high-end collectors across social media.
The result? The listing attracted over 500 watchers and ended in a fierce bidding war. The final price: £20,000.

Delivered by Hand – To a Legend
The buyer was none other than Joel Mick – former Vice President of Wizards of the Coast and current owner of Ancestral MTG. With a personal collection worth over $2 million, Joel is one of the most respected names in the Magic community.
Jake flew 12 hours from the UK to San Diego, California, to hand-deliver the card to Joel at his penthouse. There, he got a private tour of one of the world’s most valuable MTG collections – a surreal moment and a full-circle moment for a card that almost went unnoticed.
Why This Sale Matters
It’s a powerful reminder of how important grading, authentication, and proper market exposure can be. The Chambers were expecting £2,500. They walked away with eight times that – and the peace of mind that their card was handled with expert care at every stage.
And the best part? They didn’t have to do any of the legwork. MGC handled everything – from research and promotion to auction and delivery.
